Change as a Problem-Solving Scenario

The very purpose of the change is often for problem-solving, progression, or innovation.

With today’s “VUCA” new normal, to survive the fierce competitions and thrive with the long-term business advantage involve more planning, adjustment, problem-solving, and speed. The digital business dynamic allows the organization to morph as the business conditions and organizational capacities for change to allow a better fit. But change is never for its own sake, one of the great reasons for the change is to solve large or small problems either at daily basis or the long-term perspective, to push collective human progress forward.

Change Agents are encouraged to solve complex problems: Forward-looking and people-centric organizations can spot their change agents and recognize their change champions. Change agents are people who have an optimistic change mindset, organizational knowledge, have built relationships, and have established their credibility for adapting to changes. They enjoy the challenges of complex problem-solving and explore better ways to do things. Change is never for its own sake, usually, a change agent is a skillful problem-solver, enjoy understanding the complexity and guide people through it; finding common ground and initiative dialogues, or turn around the tough situations. More often, change and complex problem-solving are thorny journey, there will be bumps and roadblocks along the way, such as silo - refuse to have cross-functional communication and collaboration; polarity -we are right, they are wrong; non-critical thinking pattern -reflexive, not reflective, or simply change inertia - get stuck in the “comfort zone” for too long. The real skill of a change agent is the ability to play any role and know which to play, and when, in order to solve problems and move the business forward steadfastly.

Change is a multi-stepped process that includes both problem resolution and solution implementation: One of the change mottoes is "never mistake motion for action." The enemy is not changing per se, it's the change without focus or purpose. Business Change Management is managing everything that is necessary to get people to adopt new ways of thinking and working for solving business problems effectively, by starting with the big WHY. The goal of change and improvement should look beyond immediate problem resolution. All stages must be handled with attention and proficiency to ensure business success, embed creativity mechanism in change management scenario, and motivate people to rise above the learning curve and become true change agents as well as great problem-solver. It's getting into action in creative, positive, productive ways that educate, support and celebrate every emotional step of the change curve and collective progression. The focus should include actions designed to sustain business improvement, problem-solving, and anchor change as a new opportunity. All stages must be handled with attention and proficiency with people-centricity to ensure success.

Being cool-headed to proactively adapt to changes and solve problems: Most people seem to feel efficient -doing things right, when working on the problem reactively. However, effectiveness - doing the right things, requires a little bit of thinking before doing with a proactive mentality and attitude. Digging through the big WHY is extremely important either for change or any kind of problem-solving initiatives, in order to invest enough time for discovering the root cause of issues. All changes require a cooling period, and great problem-solvers are usually cool-headed and they can apply multi-dimensional intelligence (creative thinking, critical thinking, strategic thinking, and system thinking, etc.) that goes into problem identification as well as solution discovering, and walk through the full analyzing process about what the problem really is and how you should go about solving it holistically.

Change is not for its own sake, the very purpose of the change is often for problem-solving, progression, or innovation. Change Management is no longer just a few business initiatives, but an ongoing digital capability which enables strategy execution, and strategy management is fundamentally a problem-framing and problem-solving business continuum.
